Yayoi Kusama arrived in New York in 1958 at the age of 29. Critic and poet Akira Tatehata cites that "from 1951 until she left for the United States in 1957, Kusama concentrated entirely on works on paper...It is noteworthy that she experimented in these drawings and watercolors with motifs clearly prototypical of those sho would develop in the "net" and "dot" paintings of her early years in New York. Though they are mostly small works, these images - incorporating scattered dots and intricate, fluctuating nets - are products of obsessive repitition that seems to proliferate beyond all bounds."
