Daily Incantations 1996
nightstools, wood beams, steel, electronic debris, sound mix of the ritual cleaning of the stools

Daily Incantations is comprised of 101 nightstools (chamber pots) which the artist and his friends purchased on the streets of Shanghai. The nightstools are suspended like bells from a stadium-like structure reminiscent of an ancient Chinese musical instrument. In the center of the structure there is a large steel-band globe, filled with old radios, televisions, telephones, and other debris of the electronic (western) change transforming China. Speakers installed inside each of the nightstools play the sound of the ritual cleaning of the stools that Chinese women traditionally performed every day.
