Drawings with Eyes Closed

both: Untitled, 1966 charcoal on paper 10 x 8 in. Collection of Willem de Kooning Revocable Trust

The eyes-closed drawings seen here were created and reproduced in 1966, accompanied by de Kooning's testimony: "...it is true that I made them with eyes closed. Also, the pad I used was held horizontally. The drawings often started by the feet...but more often by the center of the body, in the middle of the page. There is nothing special about this, and I am certain that many artists have found similar ways...but I found that closing my eyes was very helpful to me."
