Richard Serra
This series was begun in the Spring of 1996 and completed at the end of Summer 1997. While continuing to use oilstick to draw with, Serra has built up the surfaces so dramatically on this series that they approach being sculpture on paper. This relief aspect is difficult to photograph; we have concentrated on the formal side of the series, namely the play of Serra's ovoid circles with the rectangle or square shape of the paper. It's a stretch to say that one is reminded of a medieval monk's inspired illumination running right off the page...but, there it is.
