Formulations John F.Simon, Jr.
Unreasonable Arithmetic Number Set(s), 1998
Ink on mylar

Have we arrived at the limits of function? Should we think again? Here, basic math is undermined by shifting the agreed-upon values of numerical notation. Whether this shift is programmed or not, the pattern of its sums proves to be practically unreliable; the system is flawed. Or, the expected system has been altered, and its results are now literary and no longer arithmetical. Our expectations are stymied, suggesting that we should look beyond formulations if we seek the sustaining force of profound meaning.
