In these photographs I have tried to touch upon this malaise d'age for I, too, am disconcerted at the seeming impingement of impersonal forces upon the destiny of our lives. But the anguish of "having been born in an unsettled society" has in the past confronted such men an Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Shakespeare, Goya, Van Gogh and Kafka, and now confronts such men as Aaron Siskind and Gene Smith. These men chose, as an affirmative value of life, engagement in and commitment to the human spirit.
